Parent's Talks
Being a parent to a busy teenager an be tricky business. It is a path fraught with tension and anxiety as you guide your teen into adulthood. It can be an immensely rewarding challenging and loving experience.
This series of talks have been organised in response to parental concerns. It is a combined initiative involving the Parent's Association, the School Management and the Care Team in the school. The course is designed to help you better understand the changing behaviour of our teenagers, their habits and interaction with the digital world, their emerging value system the pressures they face with image and fitting in. We look at how you as parents can help to navigate them through the teenage years to become well functioning, happy and rounded adults.

16th Sept - Dr John Sharry, Parent's PlusDr Sharry is a social worker and solution focused therapist, an author of ten books on parenting and positive psychology, co-developer of the Parents Plus Programmes and an international workshop leader and trainer. He is also a weekly contributor to the Irish Times Newspaper.

11th Nov - Margaret Norman, Insights into the World of AdolescentsMargaret Norman, has worked in the area of Relationships and Sexuality for approximately 18 years. She is a tutor with Accord and trains facilitators in this area. She works with students from 5th class to Leaving Cert and would work with approximately 3,600 students every year.

18th Nov - Marguerite Kiely, Pieta HouseThe talk is an informative discussion on the service Pieta provides. Marguerite is the Senior Clinical Manager for Child and Adolescents. The aim of the presentation is to provide Parents with information about self harm and suicide ideation and how to respond to adolescents who are struggling. Marguerite will share information about the issues adolescents present with and how Pieta House also support parents. The presentation is 1 hour long allowing time for questions and answers.

25th Nov - Dr Tony Bates, Young People in Search of Mental HealthDr. Tony Bates is the Founder / CEO of Headstrong – The National Centre for Youth Mental Health, in Ireland. Tony will talk about how we can strengthen the mental health of our young people; by understanding the challenges and contradictions that every young person experiences, by appreciating their critical need of support from "good adults" in their lives, and by giving them some key skills to manage their inner lives.
Since 2006, Dr. Bates and Headstrong have been immersed in designing, evaluating and refining a large-scale initiative to improve mental health outcomes for young people called Jigsaw. Tony was an editor of A Vision For Change an Irish Government policy on mental health service reform. He is an Irish Times columnist and author of several bestseller books on depression.
